CHOOSING TO DO IT FREE? Cool. Make it a deliberate courtesy, not an accidental new rule.

Three replies you can use right now

Situation 1 — It is new work

Happy to help with that. It falls outside the original scope, so I’ll confirm the extra cost and any timing impact before I start.

Situation 2 — They say it will only take five minutes

It may be quick, but it still adds work outside what we agreed. I’ll check what’s involved and confirm the extra before starting.

Situation 3 — They say “do it now, price it later”

I’m happy to take care of it once we’ve confirmed the additional work, cost and timing. That way there are no surprises for either of us.

Before sending

Replace vague references with the actual request. Check the agreement. Use a warm tone if the relationship is good; warmth does not require a discount.

The line to remember

<aside> 🧠

A deliberate favour is generosity. An accidental pattern is scope creep.
